XOXO Gossip Girl
Over the past week I’ve been trying to think of
other doppelgangers or doubles seen in the media and let me tell you there are
A LOT! To follow up on the idea about creating a double for our selves let’s
talk about the show Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl is personally one of
my favorite TV shows but basically, it’s about a group of upper East New York
teenagers who go to a prep school and live their lives like, well upper East
New York teenagers. Anyway, there’s this Brooklyn guy whose name is Dan
Humphrey. Now Dan is an aspiring writer and goes to school with the group of
upper East siders who everyone knows. Now in order to explain the connection of
doppelgangers and doubles I must spoil the show. So, there is an actual website
called Gossip Girl in the show that every teenager sees, and the contents on
the website is mainly about the upper East side teenagers and what they’re
doing. By the end of the show, you discover that Dan Humphrey was the mastermind
behind Gossip Girl. Although the site had been hacked and the traded around in
a few episodes, he was the one who had the idea and created it initially. He
created a double for himself in every situation that it was brought up who the
real Gossip Girl was. Dan lived a double life, one side of him was the poor
Brooklyn boy and the other was this author of a highly viewed website. Dan
claims that he was always obsessed with the way of life of the upper East side,
but he couldn’t get there from his socioeconomic standing, thus he wrote
himself into “their world”. Once he was a part of their world however, he lied
to everyone about being the real gossip girl. The double life that Dan portrays
is a deceiving one, but in the end, he was in the society he wanted to be in
and got the girl he wanted to get. Dan hid behind a screen to mask his identity
and picked up an alias when writing the gossip girl blog. This helped him be
more open and vulnerable when attacking people that he eventually grew to care
about. Anyway Dan created a double life for himself, on online and on in person
which were two polarizing people.
